The Blizzard of '13

Today marked the seven month birthday of the Wombats. It also marked a huge blizzard coming into town with a silly name. Winter storms get names now so that the older generation can wrinkle their nose at our silly storm named Nemo. In their day they just named the blizzard after the year. Nemo could never outdo The Blizzard of '78 even if technically we get more snow.

Roberta's Pizza with Pepperoni and Mushroom

On Wednesday I returned home with this pizza from Roberta's in Brooklyn. Elliott was having a fit and we didn't really get a chance to eat it until last night when I returned home and Martin was having a fit. It took about three hours to calm him down after which we settled down and at the pizza as if we'd just been through the traumas of war.

City Steam Brewery Naughty Nurse

I cracked open this Naughty Nurse from City Steam Brewery in hopes that she had some sort of pediatric experience. It turns out she didn't and about half way through enjoying this beer Martin woke up in a fit. He had a temperature and I ended up taking him to the doctor where he was diagnosed with RSV, a made up malady which apparently means he has a really bad cold.

Sick Martin Sleeping

Sick Elliott Sleeping in Frankenstein Mode

After finally getting the sick guys to sleep they woke up this morning for about an hour and then took a three-and-a-half hour nap.

A Million Loads of Laundry

This unexpected event allowed me to do no fewer than fifteen loads of laundry as the snow started to pile up outside.

Wombats in the Shower

Before dinner I gave the guys a bath to allow them to steam a little. They had a grand old time in the bath and we even had a FaceTime with Nana and Grandpa where I was able to avoid them grabbing my phone and tossing it into the bath. I lucked out . . . this time.

Wombats in Walkers

Today was a roller coaster of shrieking and giggling. Apparently yesterday at day care they ladies there said that Martin wouldn't eat because every time they tried to feed him he started cracking up. They tried getting another woman to feed him but they ended up with the same results. Today was similar with both of them being pretty giggly then losing their minds as they realized snot was pouring uncontrollably out of their noses.

First Mango

Tonight, in honor of seven months, I made mango for the babies. Like the peaches they were frozen and a bit acidic but the guys still seemed to like them quite a bit. Unfortunately they were so worked up they didn't really allow themselves to enjoy them as much as they could. We had to perform the rare dual-parent feeding where we both picked a baby and shoveled food into his face as fast as we possibly can. Even with this attention they still spent the fractions of seconds between spoonfuls screaming and spitting mango all over our glasses.

The Wombats' Favorite Foods (in descending order from favorite to least favorite)
  1. Pears
  2. Sweet Potato
  3. Avocado
  4. Mango*
  5. Peaches*
  6. Butternut Squash
  7. Bananas
  8. Carrot
  9. Peas
*Frozen and out of season. Will need to be ranked again when in season.
Salad with Radish, Avocado, and Tomato
After propping the guys in front of the news to watch the coverage of Winter Storm Nemo we had our dinner as the Wombats raced around the apartment in their walkers. I made this salad with radish, tomato, avocado, green onion, olive oil, salt, pepper, and lime juice.
Winter Chili with Rice
For dinner I made this chili with garlic, onion, pepper, ground beef, tomato, cumin, paprika, chili powder, hot sauce, and a touch of chocolate and peanut butter. I served it over white rice with shredded cheddar, green onion, radish, sour cream, and tomato.
KleinBrouwerij De Glazen Toren Canaster Winterscotch-Style Ale
KleinBrouwerij De Glazen Toren Canaster Winterscotch Ale
For beer I picked a beer that wasn't the most standard match for chili, this Canaster Winterscotch-Style Ale from KleinBrouwerij De Glazen Toren. This was a nice dark, Belgian ale with a very dry finish. I enjoyed it immensely in the thistle glass which Jen thinks is ridiculous.
Tier d'Erable (Maple Taffy)
Tier d'Erable (Maple Taffy)

For dessert we put out a loaf pan to collect snow from the blizzard then Jen made this Tier d'Erable. We boiled some maple syrup until soft ball stage then drizzled it over the packed snow in the pan. The result was a chewy maple sugar candy that was an amazing accompaniment to the remainder of the Canaster.

After hours Martin is still resisting sleep but it's been much easier than previous nights. That's an encouraging sign that the Wombats are beginning to feel better. I greatly look forward to returning to our pre-sickness routine and getting the guys to sleep before midnight. That should do great things for our quality of life.

But mostly for our quality of sleep.

Who Needs Sleep?

The babies have developed a nasty cough. The doctor assures us it's nothing to worry about and has given us some tips in how to deal with it. Some of these things are unrealistic but one of them was to put them in the bathroom while you shower so the steam can help clear their sinuses.

Steamed Wombats

I didn't need to shower so I just turned the shower up to full blast and let them steam for a bit. It seems wasteful to just run hot water for no real reason. It also is weird to hang out in a tiny bathroom from the 1940s with your two children for nearly an hour. It seems like some sort of panic room situation.

Acorn Squash

For dinner I cooked them up some acorn squash on the recommendation of a friend and they loved it. It ranked highly in the list of foods they've tried so far.

The Wombats' Favorite Foods (in descending order from favorite to least favorite)
  1. Pears
  2. Sweet Potato
  3. Acorn Squash
  4. Avocado
  5. Peaches*
  6. Butternut Squash
  7. Carrot
  8. Peas
Adobo Chicken with Rice, Sauteed Plantains, and Avocado
Once we bathed them and got them to bed I was free to quickly put together this dinner. I made roast chicken breast with adobo, white rice with scallions, and plantains. For the plantains I boiled them and grated them, and tossed them together with onion, pepper, and garlic in a little olive oil and adobo then added a splash of cider vinegar before serving this all up with avocado.
Lagunitas Brewing Company Little Sumpin' Wild
For a much-needed drink, after being awake since 4:30 AM, I poured this Little Sumpin' Wild from Lagunitas Brewing Company. This is a limited version of their normal Little Sumpin' Ale that is brewed with Westmalle yeast. This was recommended by a friend so when I saw a bottle I picked it up. Now I wish I'd picked up four or five of them. This is one of the best beers I've had in a long, long time.

After seventeen hours of being awake I feel surprisingly awake. In fact, after only four-and-a-half hours of sleep this morning I felt like a million bucks. Elliott woke up just before my alarm and I felt better than I've felt in months! It's amazing how adaptable the human body is to a need for sleep. I have long thought that the rigorous pace I keep in my teens and early twenties of working seventeen hour days and averaging five hours of sleep a night was just something I could never handle in my advanced age. Apparently I was wrong as I'm getting less sleep now than at any point in my life.

And I feel great. The smile of the Wombats in the morning and the promise of a tasty beer with Jen in the evening is all I need to make it through most days. You just kind of get used to exhaustion after a while.

Sleep is overrated.

Stupor Bowl Sunday

Last night was not great. I blame it on the bananas. For some reason, against all predictions, the babies did not like their first taste of bananas. Much like their mother (and apparently a huge portion of her family and mine) they found them to less than pleasing. As a result, or a mere coincidence, they pitched a rare dual-baby fit. Nothing eased the crying and both of them, though clearly exhausted, were kicking their legs and waving their arms around recklessly. Perhaps it was the sugar in the bananas. Perhaps it was some other chemical which turned them into horrific little monsters. This lasted several hours into the night and ended with us falling asleep in different areas of the house with random babies lying around. I can recall several times in the night waking up, feeling a baby nearby, wondering which baby it was, then being too tired to investigate any further and going back to sleep until the babies forced us to wake up in a stupor.

I'm reminded of a story of my mémère. Apparently when my father was a child she told him, "If you eat bananas before bed you will die." This struck me as hilarious for two reasons. Firstly, my father thought this was true until he got married. It was one of those childhood "facts" ingrained so deeply that you just know it in your heart. That is until you actually think about it and realize that it is insane. Secondly, it's such an amazingly bold lie. It's so absolute in its intent. My mémère, for whatever reason, didn't want to pussyfoot around this subject. She wanted it out there that bananas before bed were a no-no. It was the 1950s parenting equivalent of posting the severed heads of your enemies on stakes outside your castle.

Now, more than sixty years later, the wisdom of Mémère is all too clear. She was a genius. If my father reacted to bananas anywhere near as dramatically as the babies then it seems the obvious move.

I'm pretty sure, once the boys are old enough, I'm going to carry on the proud family tradition of lies and tell them that they will die a slow, painful death if they ever dare to eat bananas before bed.

"But when is before bed?" Martin may ask. "It's always before bed, isn't it?"

"Is there a cutoff?" Elliott may say. "Like, say, 9:00 PM?"

"Just don't eat bananas before bed," I will say.

"You need to define the rules of your universe," Elliott may respond.

"Yeah," Martin may say. "It's like the movie Gremlins. It's always after midnight!"

"Well then," I will explain. "I know if I were you I wouldn't take any chances."

"Good point," they may answer in unison. "Good night, Daddy!"

"Good night, my sons. Don't let the bananas bite!"

Little Boys Watching the Big Game

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. That's the one time a year when we watch football. Well, it's the one time of year we have football on in the background while we eat dinner. The Wombats, actually, were more interested in the game than we were.

The Super Bowl's a bit of a bummer because it means that we can't watch hockey. They don't even schedule any games past 3:00 PM because they know they can't compete with the Super Bowl. Hockey can barely steal fans from Pro Bowling so they opt to just give up on Super Bowl Sunday. This is partly because of ratings and partly because the players probably want to get home to see the game too. They'll play on Christmas Eve but, hey, this is the Super Bowl we're talking about.

"Are you ready for some footbaaaaallll?"

We sure are! We were so excited we even did the research to see who the two playing tonight were. The San Francisco Gold Rushers and Baltimore Chicken Hawks.

Game on! Here we go! It's game time!

Dogfish Head Hop Pickle Dip with Chips

To start off I made this dip which I saw linked to on the Dogfish Head website. It uses these hopped pickles which were a collaboration between Brooklyn Brine Co. and Dogfish Head. I've had them in the cupboard for quite some time so it was about time I got cracking and used them. The dip is made with chopped pickles, cream cheese, some pickle brine, dill, onion, and salt.

It's perfect to go with some great, Sunday night grid iron action. And, don't you just love those commercials? They're hilarious! Especially the ones with talking babies. They're so clever. How do they think of that stuff?

Super Bowl XLVII With Beer

To celebrate the Super Bowl (an event that I don't actually care about) I decided to do a side-by-side tasting of representative beers from the respective cities playing in the game. I wanted to compare beers of the same style, price, and roughly the same alcohol, content as possible to make it a fair fight.

To represent Baltimore I chose this Loose Cannon Hop3 IPA from Heavy Seas Beer (7.25% ABV). It's hopped three ways with three pounds in each barrel which has earned it the "hop cubed" name.

From San Francisco I went with the Big Daddy IPA from Speakeasy Ales & Lagers (6.5% ABV). This beer has won several awards and, while I could have gone with a more traditional Anchor Steam Beer or the like, I wanted to make the beers as similar as possible.

There are a bunch of other beers I could have tried but I went with these because I hadn't tried either before. Ideally I would have liked to do a blind taste test but, you know, that's complicated and I still need to squeeze in a few hours a night of taking care of babies so there you have it.

A safety! Do a safety! It's the only way you'll get the conversion!

San Francisco Sourdough Crostini with Goat Cheese and Roasted Tomatoes

To represent San Francisco tonight I took some San Francisco sourdough bread (actually made in Connecticut) and made these crostini with goat cheese and roasted tomatoes.

Log on to GoDaddy's website to see what happens next!

Baltimore Chicken Box

From Baltimore I made this chicken box that I remember seeing on an episode of No Reservations. I quickly battered and fried these chicken wings and served them on top of some krinkle cut French fries with ketchup and hot sauce. Apparently this is a Baltimore staple food. I've never actually had it in Baltimore but I have had it at my kitchen table. I think it probably loses a little something not being eaten at a sticky table with a napkin dispenser and one of those red ketchup squeeze bottles but it was still pretty tasty.

In all fairness, our table is often sticky too. How's that for authenticity?

Sack? You call that a sack? Get your head out of your ass, ref! Where did they get these refs anyway? Are the replacement refs back? Geez!

Lobster Rolls

Just because it didn't seem like a complete meal eating only bread and fried items I decided to serve an additional item: lobster rolls. Why? Because I like lobster rolls, was in the mood for them, and decided we hadn't had them in a while. Besides, it's our way of protesting the fact that they won't approve our petition to add a Maine team to the NFL. The Bangor Ruffians would be an awesome team.

Oh my God, I can't believe they let Beyonce sing. Don't they know she lip syncs? Oh my God, check out that other person that made a surprise appearance! That is so cool! What a show they put on! I can't believe what a letdown this is, we just want to see some football. Still, what stagecraft. Bravo!

San Francisco It's It

For dessert I had heard about this cookie called the It's It cookie from San Francisco. I had thought we would pick a dessert from the winning team's city and just have that but I didn't think I'd have the time to also make Berger cookies from Baltimore. So I put all my cards on the table and gambled that San Francisco would take this game.

The It's It is an oatmeal cookie sandwich with vanilla ice cream in the center that is dunked in chocolate. As you can imagine it is pretty much a winner. The Berger cookies sounded good too. Better luck next time, Baltimore! If that's your city's real name!

Oops. Is that game still going on? I wonder who got the most points. It's so hard to follow. Won't somebody please post the score or some details on Facebook or Twitter? Please? Anyone? Who will be brave enough to do this so that we may know how it turned out? What brave soul will save us from this land of sporting ignorance?

I, for one, am ready for some football.

Chocolate-Covered Bananas and NHL Hockey

It must be so exciting to be a baby. Every day is filled with new things, things you've never done before. Places you have never been, foods you have never eaten, things you have never seen.

Today Jen took the guys to visit friends in Brooklyn then returned home where I prepared another new food for them: bananas.

Banana Puree

We had great hopes for bananas. They are sweet. They are delicious. They are full of sugar. According to my parents I loved them as a baby. Unfortunately they were met with tempered disdain.

Elliott's First Taste of Bananas

Tempered disdain.

The Wombats' Favorite Foods (in descending order from favorite to least favorite)
  1. Pears
  2. Sweet Potato
  3. Avocado
  4. Peaches*
  5. Butternut Squash
  6. Banana
  7. Carrot
  8. Peas
They are surprisingly showing up in the bottom half on their food rankings so far just below butternut squash and just above carrots. They didn't hate them, they just didn't seem impressed in any way.
Thomas Hooker Chocolate Truffle Stout
After getting them to bed, then getting them to bed again, then letting Martin stay up and watch the Boson Bruins play the Toronto Maple Leafs, I poured myself this Chocolate Truffle Stout from Thomas Hooker Brewing Company. This beer was made in collaboration with Munson's Chocolates, another Connecticut institution. It's funny, beers that are actually brewed with chocolate often don't have much more chocolate flavor than those brewed without. It was tasty and didn't taste anywhere near it's 7.1% ABV.
Late Night Martin Watching Hockey

By the time I'd finished the beer Jen had long since fallen asleep and Martin was nowhere near close to sleep. He was enjoying hockey almost as much as he did when he was in the womb and Jen watched a game with a lot of fights.

It's precious to watch your baby really enjoy something, however, not half as precious as it is to watch them go the hell to sleep.

Ancient Times

As the Super Bowl approaches we continue to find things to get excited about. Neither of us cares about football at all but, for some reason, we look forward to the Super Bowl each year. I, as you may know, am a big fan of any day or event that gives reason to make very specific foods. This year, however, I will attempt to make a dinner that does not include a "Buffalo" version of anything.

In anticipation of the big game Elliott has taken to doing his impression of the Goodyear Blimp. It's pretty spot on if you ask me. It's all about the subtleties of his movement.

Jen and I have chosen to prepare by watching hockey every night and sort of not knowing who is actually playing on Sunday. While I don't really care about the commercials it is actually pretty interesting as this is the only time of the year I ever see commercials. It's intriguing to know that they still exist.

Pears

The Wombats' First Taste of Pears

For dinner tonight we gave the Wombats their first taste of pears. We purchased them last week but they were finally ripe enough to puree with the immersion blender. They were very juicy so I added a little bit of oatmeal for consistency.

Jen's mother hates pears. She distrusts them thinking they only exist in nature to trick people into believing they are apples and subsequently disappointing them. Sadly for her I think we have a new leader in the food race.

The Wombats' Favorite Foods (in descending order from favorite to least favorite)
  1. Pears
  2. Sweet Potato
  3. Avocado
  4. Peaches*
  5. Butternut Squash
  6. Carrot
  7. Peas
Kale and Barley Salad with Radish, Almond, and Grape Tomato
For salad I made this nice healthy salad of kale, barley, tomato, almond, radish, lemon, olive oil, salt, and pepper. There is nothing more virtuous than eating a giant plate of raw kale. It makes you feel like you have earned pork.
Freekeh with Kale, Tomato, and Garlic
For the main course I made another virtuous meal of the ancient grain freekeh. It's amusing to me that it's such a modern trend to feature ancient grains that have been around and in use for a minimum of 6,000 years. So trendy. I cooked the freekeh and added it to some browned onion and garlic, kale, diced tomato, paprika, cumin, hot sauce, lemon, olive oil, salt, and pepper. This dinner was tasty, wholesome, and a great excuse to eat a mess of pork belly at some later date.
Dogfish Head Birra Etrusca Bronze
To go with this ancient grain I decided to crack open this bottle of Birra Etrusca Bronze from Dogfish Head. This is the latest release in their ancient ales series. For this beer they traveled to Rome with molecular archaeologist Dr. Pat McGovern and analyzed data from the drinking containers from 2,800-year-old Etruscan tombs. They tried to recreate the beers drunk by ancient Etruscans with this particular beer. I'm a bit ashamed to admit that these stories always intrigue me and get me excited to try their beers. I'm even more excited to try their beers now that Jen got me these super-sweet Dogfish Head Signature Glass.
Daddy and Elliott at Port Chester Beer Distributors
We picked this up the other day at the beer store where Jen read the ingredient list off the bottle (honey, hazelnut flour, heirloom wheat, myrrh, genlian root, raisins, pomegranate juice, and pomegranate) and declared that she was very skeptical of it. Understandably so. It was very good but much more like wine than I'd have expected.
Another thing Jen is skeptical of is my new love of Vine. She doesn't believe that it adds anything to pictures of beer. I disagree. It adds something very important . . .

My amusement!
