Enter the Summer

With summer nearly upon us we have already been hit with several days where temps almost hit triple digits. It's also given everyone their annual reminder on our anniversary to recount how hot it was on our wedding day. It's always nice on the anniversary of one of the most important days of your life to be reminded by everyone you know that they only memory they have of that day was the uncomfortable heat, not the joyous celebration of love.

Rainy Day Pokemon Hunt

Before the heat hit I had promised the boys we could go on a Pokemon hunt. Unfortunately that day ended up being rainy and cold but they had very few complaints.

Drawing Cards After Swim Class

Birthday party season has been ramping up so we've had some hectic weekends including this day where the boys had to quickly draw birthday cards for their friend after swim class so we could rush to his party.

Eighty percent of their class was born in July so we may just both need to take the entire month off of work.

Colossal Squid Fighting a "Squirm" Whale

So far 2017 has been the year of the Colossal Squid fighting the "Squirm" Whale. Martin is captivated by the rivalry between these two animals and spent much of the last month drawing pictures of epic struggles between the two sea creatures.

Martin Taking Pictures of Hockey Game on TV

Martin has also been obsessed with hockey which means he has spent a lot of time taking pictures of hockey on the TV so he could later draw pictures of the hockey players.

Elliott Gardening wtih Grandad

On Mother's Day there was much gardening done where Elliott dutifully helped Grandad weed our often neglected vegetable garden.

Beaudry Family

Mother's Day was a lot of fun, mostly because I got to avoid doing any of the gardening.

Hamilton

Shortly thereafter we finally got to go see Hamilton. The key to easing the blow on the monetary investment for Hamilton is that you have to buy the tickets so far ahead of time that by the time you go it was so long ago that it feels like you're getting to go for free!

Civil War Days

We also took the kids to Civil War Days for the first year since moving here in hopes that they'd be old enough where the cannons and guns would not startle them. This was trye for the boys though Josie was still not a huge fan.

Civil War Days

The boys even got to see what it was like to be barked at by a 1860s drill sergeant. It was pretty amusing to watch.

Civil War Days

Josie elected to just eat a donut rather than participating.

Last Skating Class

They also completed their season of skating lessons which we celebrated with pizza dinner with Grandma and Grandad.

Downtown Pokemon Hunt

On a really nice day we even headed downtown for another Pokemon hunt. After a long winter and mostly rainy spring the boys were very excited to get out there and catch some new monsters.

Zoo Trip

We also took them to the zoo where they got to experience the new dinosaur exhibit which the boys really loved.

Zoo Trip

Josie was a little less excited about the animatronic dinosaurs.

Pre-K Graduation

They boys also had their graduation from Pre-K which we again celebrated with a pizza dinner. There's something a little anticlimactic about having a Pre-K graduation on a Friday. Perhaps it's the fact that they have to go right back to school on Monday.

Building Shed for Mummy

Jen went out of town for work so we decided to surprise Mummy by building her a shed for her gardening supplies. Elliott and Josie were a huge help. Mostly they just wanted to sit inside it as I built it or play hide-and-seek where they closed the doors, told me to find them, then got upset when I found them.

Martin's Lions Jersey

Martin helped by creating a football team called The Lions by drawing a lion and putting it over the logo of one of his jerseys.

Martin's Football Game

He then also made me fashion him a football helmet and downloaded a strange game where you make a football team then just watch them play a simulated game.

Cavalcade of Planes (2017)

We also went to the Cavalcade of Planes for our third time since moving here.

Elliott Resting on Uncle Doug

Mostly the children just complained about how hot it was and melodramatically threw themselves around.

It was moderately warm.

Martin Resting in Bed after the Cavalcade of Planes

They were so dramatic that I thought they were coming down with something. Martin went straight to bed and watched Wild Kratts as soon as they got home.

Elliott Playing Super Mario Bros. After the Cavalcade of Planes

Elliott played Super Mario Bros. on my newly hooked up arcade system.

Mario and Luigi Playing Super Mario Bros.

Soon Martin was enticed to come downstairs and, of course, convince his brother that they both needed to dress up like the Mario Bros. if they were going to play.

Walking to School

It's been nice to once again walk to school on a daily basis and take advantage of the beautiful weather. Even if it means their procrastination and general lollygagging means we're late every day.

Making Ricotta Gnocchi

The kids, mostly Elliott, were really excited to make gnocchi again so we made a giant batch.

Ricotta Gnocchi with Garden Herbs

Tossed with some fresh herbs from the garden and a little olive oil they were delicious. The kids mostly just wanted them with marinara sauce.

Neighborhood Garage Sale Deals

Neighborhood Garage Sale Deals

We got some great deals at our neighborhood garage sale including a nice chair, love seat, and ottoman as well as a fully functional snowblower which was essentially free.

Hot Day Pool Fun

With temps entering the high 90s it was time for our backyard water park to be opened for the year. Unfortunately the children keep getting larger but our tiny, tiny pools seem to remain the same size.

Ice Cream Cones!

Sadly I've had to abandon the sugar cone which is, in my opinion, the only acceptable form of ice cream cone. I think I may finally realize why the flavorless, styrofoamesque cake cone exists: it is far more durable. Children just can't seem to handle the sugar cone without it breaking into a thousand pieces.

Burgers for Mason

We also had dinner in celebration of our friend Mason who would have turned 7 last week. Burgers were his favorite food and we made them in honor of his life and the impact he made on everyone that had the pleasure to have met him.

Heritage Prairie Farm Pig Gig

For Father's Day the fathers in the family went to Heritage Prairie Farm's Pig Gig, a pig roast and beer pairing. It was a fine evening and despite the look on my father-in-law's face I think he had a really good time.

107th Annual Swedish Day Midsummer Festival

On Father's Day we took a ride to Geneva where we'd heard legend that they had a replica viking ship. When we got there we discovered that they were celebrating their 107th annual Swedish festival.

107th Annual Swedish Day Midsummer Festival

So we spent a lot of time on their makeshift obstacle course, playing soccer, and battling with viking helmets and swords that were given to our children an a deep discount for no other reason than that they just amused by them.

107th Annual Swedish Day Midsummer Festival

We ended by touring the Viking ship which was quite impressive.

Lunchtime Pokemon Hunt

We finished off the afternoon with a very late lunch and Pokemon hunt which Martin enjoyed.

Lunchtime Pokemon Hunt

Elliott, like his Grandad, often has trouble displaying his true happiness in photos.

Movetoberfest

Last Monday began the real part of our move to Chicagoland. We brought the guys to their last day at day care on Monday to buy us the time to try to wrap up last minute things in our apartment. We were supposed to fly out on Monday but due to a booking error on my part that had to get moved up to Tuesday.

This ended up being an extremely lucky error.

Martin and Nana

Grandpa and Elliott

Nana and Grandpa came over in the evening to see the boys and were kind enough to volunteer to watch the apartment while the movers packed us up. This would turn into a huge regret for them by the middle of the week.

Re-Stolen Bike

During the packing I discovered that my bike had been stolen from our basement. Luckily, while going into one of the other buildings in our complex I happened upon something that looked suspiciously like my bike. It ended up looking enough like my bike that I was convinced it was my bike. Someone had actually put some work into it, removing the old broken shifters and cleaning it up.

That extra work made it extra sweet when I stole it right back!

Moving Truck

The moving truck seemed a bit on the huge side of our apartment where it dominated the street and oppressed drivers for two full days.

Manhattan Skyline

We got an early start to our day on Tuesday and Jen bid farewell to Manhattan as we approached the airport.

Martin Reading Sky Mall

The guys were extremely well behaved on the plane, allaying all of my biggest fears. In fact I had to spend a lot of time shushing Martin because he was laughing too loud. Then he eventually just fell asleep.

Lauren met us in Chicago where I installed the car seats in her car before heading back into the air airport to board a plane back to New York.

Elliott in New Play Room

Elliott wasted no time getting acquainted with their new play room once they arrived at Grandma and Grandad's.

Elliott Making a Mess in Play Room

He also wasted no time in making a tremendous mess.

Evelyn Taking Refuge

Cousing Evelyn took refuge from her rampaging cousins.

Pete Taking Refuge

Pete also found it safest outside, far from their play room.

Leaving New York on the GWB

The following morning I woke up at 4:00 AM and hit the road, crossing the George Washington Bridge close to 5:00 AM thanks to the perpetual I-95 New York traffic.

Dark, Lonely New Jersey Roads

New Jersey was quick to get through but not much to look at.

Sunrise in Pennsylvania

As the sun rose over Pennnsylvania, things became a little more interested and I shared the road mostly with just fog and the occasional trucker.

Lying Signs in Pennsylvania (Cropped)

The only other thing that seemed to be in Pennsylvania were these great big signs which lie to you. At first I accepted that I was, in fact, going over the speed limit. Out of curiosity I started slowing it down to 60, 55, and even 50 as I passed and each time the sign just lied, saying I was going greater than 65 miles per hour!

I wonder how effective these signs are in reducing speeding. Maybe they should try another tactic to reduce crime by having the signs say, "Hey! We know about that body in your trunk!"

Welcome to Ohio

Around noon I entered into Ohio, home of the famous Ohio Grassman!

Welcome to Indiana

After an uneventful few hours in Ohio where I only ran into comedian Doug Stanhope at a highway rest stop, I ended up in Indiana.

Three Floyds Brew Pub

After fourteen hours on the road I decided to take a quick detour to visit Three Floyds and pick up a few beers on my way to Jen's parents. This also gave me the opportunity to tour scenic Munster, Indiana.

Welcome to Illinois

At the end of my journey I entered Illinois where it was a quick drive until I was at my final destination.

Daddy Arriving in Illinois After 14 Hour Drive

The boys seemed to have had a great time playing in the yard before I got there but, nonetheless, they were pretty happy to see me.

Stealing Grandma's Tomatoes

Not as happy, however, as they were about stealing tomatoes from their grandmother's garden and eating them like apples.

Martin Sorting Socks

One of Martin's most fun activities so far has been taking the socks out of the sock bin and sorting them. Putting the bin in his crib has even caused him to calm down long enough to go to sleep.

Martin's Sock Mess

It has also caused him to stay awake after distributing them about the room.

Martin's Sock Stash

After his nap I also discovered a secret stash of socks under his pillow.

Bubses in Sandbox

Their grandma also got them a sandbox which they have enjoyed immensely. This has been used to entertain them while Jen and I were off house-hunting.

House Hunting

The hunt has not gone exactly as I'd hoped but it has been fun. We found one place we agreed on but, of course, it was snatched up from under us a mere hour after we viewed it. There is another house Jen loves that I'm not crazy about and I house that I love that she is not crazy about.

It looks like Christmas as Jen's parents' house may require a car ride from us this year.

Househunting Gone Wrong

The last stop on our house tour on Friday resulted on me foolishly backing off the driveway into a ditch. This meant about $700 of damage to our car, needing a rental, and severly hindering our house-hunting efforts for the day.

Getting Towed

Luckily a skilled tow truck operator was able to pull us out so that we could bring our car to the shop. Sadly, he did not have any tools in his truck to repair humiliation.

Daddy and Martin Looking at Wolves

On Saturday, after a trip to the farmer's market, we wound up at a local zoo where Martin was fascinated by wolves.

Auntie Lauren and Elliott Looking at Bald Eagles

Elliott was taken with the majesty of the bald eagle. Martin liked maple leaves better than bald eagles so I think they have both chosen their allegiances carefully.

Martin in the Tunnel

Jen had picked up a tunnel at Ikea that they both avoided like the plague for the first few days but finally they warmed up to it.

Elliott Through the Tunnel

Elliott enjoyed how much the tunnel made him look like he was in the opening to a James Bond film.

Wombats at the Grocery Store

We eventually depleted Jen's parents' house of food and had to make a trip to the grocery store to restock, mostly on milk which they are now paring up to drink a gallon of a day.

Beer Braised Sausage and Cabbage

I made some beer braised bratwurst, Italian sausage, and kielbasa for a fall Oktoberfest meal.

Three Floyds Munsterfest

And, of course, this was only so that it could be an appropriate accompaniment to the Three Floyds Munsterfest beer.

Saying Helllo to Cousin Evelyn

Cousin Evelyn came over for dinner and we all worked carefully to make sure the boys did not trample her. Martin has been very nice and gentle and has even given her nice hugs. Elliott has been a little more like Lennie Small in his affection.

Mirai Sweet Corn

Doug picked up this Mirai sweet corn at the farmer's market after raving about how good it was and his raves were justified. This may have been some of the best corn I ever had.

Martin with the Plate of Ham

We had the corn the following night along with a giant plate of ham which seemed to worry Martin at first, until he had a taste.

First Day at New Day Care

On Monday the boys attended their first day at their new day care where they warmed up quickly and made some new friends.

Revolution Brewing Oktoberfest

After getting them to bed, and after my first day at my new job, I celebrated the area and the season with this Oktoberfest from Revolution Brewing.

There is no shortage of new beers to try -- maybe the best side effect of moving across country.

Today I'm checking out an open house before I head to work in hopes that we will be able to find a place soon.

House Hunting (shack)

If not, I think I found a place that may just be in our price range.
