The Fax of Life

The house hunt continues. Last Friday, after an incredibly long work day for Jen, she met me and our realtor in the midst of a house hunt. It was around 7:00 PM and we were both tired and hungry. The hunt didn't end until 10:00 PM at which time we abandoned our plans of a baby-free dinnertime and just went home, ate cold pizza, then went to bed.

This Shelf is Not Staying with the House

In the midst of our hunt we came across this little shelf in one of the entryways of the houses we were checking out.

\

Sadly, the shelf did not come with the house. We were prepared to offer $25,000 over the asking price but no shelf, no deal!

Jeppson's Malort

Over the weekend I was finally able to locate some Jeppson's Malort, a renowned and despised beverage of the Chicagoland area. Once I heard about how disgusting it was and how you could only get it in this immediate area I had to try it.

It was not as bad as everyone said it was. However, it was very, very bad. It starts out with a pleasant Campari-like bitterness that just swells and grows in your mouth and then seems to cause your taste buds to implode as if there were a black hole growing in your esophagus.

Martin Identifying Pete

Martin has been obsessed with Jen's mum's dog, Pete, and has become quite good at alerting us all to his presence. He spends most of any given day pointing at Pete excitedly yelling, "Dah! Dah!" I really think he thinks we can't see Pete and he's trying to do his best to sound the alarm that there is a strange, furry little man lurking in the house.

Lauren, Evelyn, Gary, Martin, and Elliott at Apple Orchard

On Saturday, as I worked, Jen went apple picking with Lauren, Evelyn, the boys, and her dad.

Martin Eating Apple

Elliott Looking Like a Tough Guy

The Wombats seemed to have a pretty enjoyable time. Now, luckily for me, I have thirty pounds of apples that I need to figure out something to do with before they rot.

Early Morning Breakfast

Living here has been dominated by having to get up incredibly early to feed the boys breakfast and get them to day care before I go off to work and Jen begins the nightmarish death march that is her commute to work. This means sitting them in front of some milk-filled sippy cups, muffins, and grapes that they really have no interest in eating before we drop them off. We do this because the day care claims to not provide breakfast, yet every morning the first thing they do is plop down a bowl of cereal in front of them.

Bubs Pickup in 6-Child Stroller

Surprisingly it is quite frequent that when I go to pick them off I often run into them on the street in a mega-stroller with four other kids.

Squirrel Nest in Stroller

Speaking of strollers, we've been leaving our stroller in the garage but, unfortunately there is a misfit family of chipmunks that has taken over the place. One day they filled the seat with birdseed. That didn't seem so bad until the next day when they got muddy chipmunk footprints all over it, pooped in the seat, and actually chewed away part of one of the straps.

I preferred the bird seed prank, actually.

Wild Game Meats by Czimer

Driving home from work each night I kept passing this place that sells exotic meats. Finally I had to stop in and see what they got.

Czimers's Meat Selection

I got a full menu of what they have available. My current desire is to try their lion steaks. I'm just not sure how to cook them and ever time I type "lion steak recipes" into Google it says, "Surely you mean loin steak recipes."

So if anyone out there knows a traditional way to cook African lion, please shoot me an email!

Stewed Beef with Peppers

Since everyone here is too much of a wuss to be interested in trying lion I had to stick to more conventional meats like beef. Boring! So I threw together a beef stew with some of the many peppers in the fridge.

Pulled Pork and Grilled Chicken Tacos

Doug made up some tacos with corn and flour tortillas, pulled pork, grilled chicken, bacon and goat cheese guacamole, and a number of other delicious toppings.

Martin has been slowly discovered dancing and his favorite song is the ABC song from this little musical table that Aunt Lauren picked up.

I'm a bit fond of the scatting woman, myself. This table has some kickin' jams!

Vegetarian Cornbread Stuffed Roasted Pumpkin

On Pumpkin theme night I made a vegetarian version of the stuffed roasted pumpkin with cornbread, fresno chilies, Swiss chard, and onions. I also got a nice aged cheddar which I forgot to add to it which I will need to relegate to snack status.

Uinta Brewing Company Crooked Line Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin Aged in Oak Barrels (2012)

For pumpkin theme night we also had this Crooked Line Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin Ale from Uinta Brewing Company which I've been sitting on for over a year. It aged pretty well and survived the trip across country as well. It's sort of like the way they aged port by sailing it around in ships. Our Subaru Outback creates a similar environment while speeding down I-80.

Prairie State Winery Prairie Pumpkin Wine

I even picked up a pumpkin wine which Lauren loved since it had approximately a 2:1 ratio of sugar to wine. Jen said it was "disgusting" while I thought that a thimble full would suffice.

Window Playtime

After day care it's a bit of a challenge getting them both inside which leads to one Wombat inside, one outside, and a new game to keep them busy for a few minutes.

Another Potential New Home

Yesterday morning I got a call from the realtor to check out a new place which looked quite nice. I raced down, checked it over, then got a call that Martin had a fever and had to pick him up from day care. I entertained him for a bit while furiously trying to organize a showing for Jen and getting Lauren to come over and babysit him so I could get to work.

Martin Correctly Identifying Pete (Again)

Martin stayed home today where we had an early visit with the new doctor and confirmed that he either has hand, foot, and mouth disease or roseola. Either way it just means that he will have fever for a few days with very few other symptoms and will get a rash when it goes away. We had a blast this morning watching "What Does the Fox Say?" performed live on the Today Show and just playing around.

All in all it's been a pretty fun day, other than faxing a lot of legal documents back and forth between me, Jen, and the realtor in order to get an offer in on a house. Faxing still remains the most baffling technology to me as to why it still exists. I'd rather do anything that fax.

I'd rather have hand, foot, and mouth disease.

Movetoberfest

Last Monday began the real part of our move to Chicagoland. We brought the guys to their last day at day care on Monday to buy us the time to try to wrap up last minute things in our apartment. We were supposed to fly out on Monday but due to a booking error on my part that had to get moved up to Tuesday.

This ended up being an extremely lucky error.

Martin and Nana

Grandpa and Elliott

Nana and Grandpa came over in the evening to see the boys and were kind enough to volunteer to watch the apartment while the movers packed us up. This would turn into a huge regret for them by the middle of the week.

Re-Stolen Bike

During the packing I discovered that my bike had been stolen from our basement. Luckily, while going into one of the other buildings in our complex I happened upon something that looked suspiciously like my bike. It ended up looking enough like my bike that I was convinced it was my bike. Someone had actually put some work into it, removing the old broken shifters and cleaning it up.

That extra work made it extra sweet when I stole it right back!

Moving Truck

The moving truck seemed a bit on the huge side of our apartment where it dominated the street and oppressed drivers for two full days.

Manhattan Skyline

We got an early start to our day on Tuesday and Jen bid farewell to Manhattan as we approached the airport.

Martin Reading Sky Mall

The guys were extremely well behaved on the plane, allaying all of my biggest fears. In fact I had to spend a lot of time shushing Martin because he was laughing too loud. Then he eventually just fell asleep.

Lauren met us in Chicago where I installed the car seats in her car before heading back into the air airport to board a plane back to New York.

Elliott in New Play Room

Elliott wasted no time getting acquainted with their new play room once they arrived at Grandma and Grandad's.

Elliott Making a Mess in Play Room

He also wasted no time in making a tremendous mess.

Evelyn Taking Refuge

Cousing Evelyn took refuge from her rampaging cousins.

Pete Taking Refuge

Pete also found it safest outside, far from their play room.

Leaving New York on the GWB

The following morning I woke up at 4:00 AM and hit the road, crossing the George Washington Bridge close to 5:00 AM thanks to the perpetual I-95 New York traffic.

Dark, Lonely New Jersey Roads

New Jersey was quick to get through but not much to look at.

Sunrise in Pennsylvania

As the sun rose over Pennnsylvania, things became a little more interested and I shared the road mostly with just fog and the occasional trucker.

Lying Signs in Pennsylvania (Cropped)

The only other thing that seemed to be in Pennsylvania were these great big signs which lie to you. At first I accepted that I was, in fact, going over the speed limit. Out of curiosity I started slowing it down to 60, 55, and even 50 as I passed and each time the sign just lied, saying I was going greater than 65 miles per hour!

I wonder how effective these signs are in reducing speeding. Maybe they should try another tactic to reduce crime by having the signs say, "Hey! We know about that body in your trunk!"

Welcome to Ohio

Around noon I entered into Ohio, home of the famous Ohio Grassman!

Welcome to Indiana

After an uneventful few hours in Ohio where I only ran into comedian Doug Stanhope at a highway rest stop, I ended up in Indiana.

Three Floyds Brew Pub

After fourteen hours on the road I decided to take a quick detour to visit Three Floyds and pick up a few beers on my way to Jen's parents. This also gave me the opportunity to tour scenic Munster, Indiana.

Welcome to Illinois

At the end of my journey I entered Illinois where it was a quick drive until I was at my final destination.

Daddy Arriving in Illinois After 14 Hour Drive

The boys seemed to have had a great time playing in the yard before I got there but, nonetheless, they were pretty happy to see me.

Stealing Grandma's Tomatoes

Not as happy, however, as they were about stealing tomatoes from their grandmother's garden and eating them like apples.

Martin Sorting Socks

One of Martin's most fun activities so far has been taking the socks out of the sock bin and sorting them. Putting the bin in his crib has even caused him to calm down long enough to go to sleep.

Martin's Sock Mess

It has also caused him to stay awake after distributing them about the room.

Martin's Sock Stash

After his nap I also discovered a secret stash of socks under his pillow.

Bubses in Sandbox

Their grandma also got them a sandbox which they have enjoyed immensely. This has been used to entertain them while Jen and I were off house-hunting.

House Hunting

The hunt has not gone exactly as I'd hoped but it has been fun. We found one place we agreed on but, of course, it was snatched up from under us a mere hour after we viewed it. There is another house Jen loves that I'm not crazy about and I house that I love that she is not crazy about.

It looks like Christmas as Jen's parents' house may require a car ride from us this year.

Househunting Gone Wrong

The last stop on our house tour on Friday resulted on me foolishly backing off the driveway into a ditch. This meant about $700 of damage to our car, needing a rental, and severly hindering our house-hunting efforts for the day.

Getting Towed

Luckily a skilled tow truck operator was able to pull us out so that we could bring our car to the shop. Sadly, he did not have any tools in his truck to repair humiliation.

Daddy and Martin Looking at Wolves

On Saturday, after a trip to the farmer's market, we wound up at a local zoo where Martin was fascinated by wolves.

Auntie Lauren and Elliott Looking at Bald Eagles

Elliott was taken with the majesty of the bald eagle. Martin liked maple leaves better than bald eagles so I think they have both chosen their allegiances carefully.

Martin in the Tunnel

Jen had picked up a tunnel at Ikea that they both avoided like the plague for the first few days but finally they warmed up to it.

Elliott Through the Tunnel

Elliott enjoyed how much the tunnel made him look like he was in the opening to a James Bond film.

Wombats at the Grocery Store

We eventually depleted Jen's parents' house of food and had to make a trip to the grocery store to restock, mostly on milk which they are now paring up to drink a gallon of a day.

Beer Braised Sausage and Cabbage

I made some beer braised bratwurst, Italian sausage, and kielbasa for a fall Oktoberfest meal.

Three Floyds Munsterfest

And, of course, this was only so that it could be an appropriate accompaniment to the Three Floyds Munsterfest beer.

Saying Helllo to Cousin Evelyn

Cousin Evelyn came over for dinner and we all worked carefully to make sure the boys did not trample her. Martin has been very nice and gentle and has even given her nice hugs. Elliott has been a little more like Lennie Small in his affection.

Mirai Sweet Corn

Doug picked up this Mirai sweet corn at the farmer's market after raving about how good it was and his raves were justified. This may have been some of the best corn I ever had.

Martin with the Plate of Ham

We had the corn the following night along with a giant plate of ham which seemed to worry Martin at first, until he had a taste.

First Day at New Day Care

On Monday the boys attended their first day at their new day care where they warmed up quickly and made some new friends.

Revolution Brewing Oktoberfest

After getting them to bed, and after my first day at my new job, I celebrated the area and the season with this Oktoberfest from Revolution Brewing.

There is no shortage of new beers to try -- maybe the best side effect of moving across country.

Today I'm checking out an open house before I head to work in hopes that we will be able to find a place soon.

House Hunting (shack)

If not, I think I found a place that may just be in our price range.
